On April 13, 2023, the Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District’s Board of Education approved the annual Special Education Payout to local districts for costs incurred in the 2021-2022 school year.

AMA ESD Superintendent Justin Gluesing noted that this year’s support totaled $1,559,767, which includes Act 18 funds and Medicaid reimbursements.  Act 18 dollars also include the distribution of local funds collected through the Special Education Millage, which voters renewed in 2016.  Millage funds also go to support programming and services through the AMA ESD, including but not limited to Pied Piper School.

The amount provided to each local district is as follows:

  • Alpena Public Schools = $920,505

  • Alcona Community Schools = $335,254

  • Atlanta Community Schools = $79,548

  • Hillman Community Schools = $224,460

“These funds help provide critical resources to our local districts,” said Gluesing. “We are grateful for the continued support of the many communities that make up our three-county region.”
