Alpena, MI — The Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District (AMA ESD) is pleased to announce the addition of three new members to its Board of Education: Darrin Lightner, Lenny Avery, and Lisa Thayer. Each brings a wealth of professional expertise, community service, and passion for supporting students across Northeast Michigan.
Since 1988, Darrin Lightner has held various educational roles in Northeast Michigan. He currently serves as the Dual Enrollment and Early Middle College Liaison at Alpena Community College. Education runs deep in Darrin’s family. His father taught in the Alpena Public Schools for 35 years, while his four sisters and his wife, Mary, have all pursued careers in education. Originally appointed to the AMA ESD Board in April 2025, Darrin joined to give back to the community and to support all students across the AMA region.
Lenny Avery began his professional career as a patient advocate with the Disability Network, helping individuals with disabilities navigate public systems and achieve independent living. He now serves as Economic Development Coordinator for Target Alpena, leading housing and economic strategies across 11 counties in Northeast Michigan. His experience spans education, health, housing, and nonprofit sectors, and he brings a particular passion for advocating for students with special needs.
Lisa Thayer has dedicated more than 15 years to serving students as the School Nurse for Alpena Public Schools. Her role has provided her with an in-depth understanding of the physical, emotional, and academic needs of students. In addition to her professional work, Lisa has been a devoted community volunteer while raising her four children. Lisa’s deep community roots and student-centered perspective guide her commitment to serving on the AMA ESD Board.
“We are honored to welcome Darrin, Lenny, and Lisa to the AMA ESD Board of Education,” said Justin Gluesing, AMA ESD Superintendent. “Each of them brings a unique blend of experience, expertise, and community dedication that will strengthen our mission of serving students across our region.”
